Belonging to extrusive rock, basalt is similar to gabbro. It is either of vesicular structure or amygdaloidal. Compression strength varies with structure(100-500 M Pa). Density is 2900-3500 kg/m3.
Basalt is optimal material for road, railway and airfield runway construction due to its high anti-abrasion, poor electrical conductivity, high compression strength, high asphalt adhesion, low crushing value, etc. Basalt with vesicular structure is hard and usually mixed in concrete, which lightens concrete and addssound and heat insulation features to light concrete.
